Dans le New York du début des années 1980, Christine est une écrivaine qui peine à boucler ses fins de mois. Pour subvenir à ses besoins, elle décide de travailler à la billetterie du Variety, un cinéma pornographique de Times Square. Au fil du temps, son obsession pour les images et les sons des films projetés grandit, ainsi que sa fascination pour un spectateur nommé Louie. Son désir d'en savoir plus sur ce mystérieux homme d'affaires est tel qu’elle commence à le suivre.
