Ghetto de Varsovie, 1939. Władysław Szpilman, un célèbre pianiste juif échappe de peu à la déportation. Alors qu’il parvient à se réfugier dans les maisons abandonnées de la ville en ruines et qu’il lutte pour survivre, il est repéré par un officier allemand. Ce dernier, mélomane et convaincu de bientôt perdre la guerre, décide de l’aider.
