Londres, 1938. La pétillante Cluny Brown remplace son oncle plombier en débouchant l’évier d’un certain Hilary Ames. Sur place, Cluny fait la rencontre du charmant pique-assiette Adam Belinski, avec qui elle sirote quelques verres. Lorsque son oncle arrive et la trouve en train de batifoler, il décide de la punir. La jeune femme se voit alors contrainte de partir loin d’Adam pour officier comme gouvernante chez Lord et Lady Carmel.
