Les enquêteurs Phil DiNatale et John S. Bottomly sont au pied du mur. Cela fait quatre ans qu’un tueur en série viole et assassine des femmes dans la ville conservatrice de Boston. Onze victimes au total, et pas un seul suspect. Et pour cause, « l’étrangleur de Boston » n’est autre qu’Albert DeSalvo, un tranquille plombier, père de famille. Souffrant de schizophrénie, il tue sans être conscient de ses actes et n’en garde aucun souvenir. Jusqu’au jour où un détail met les enquêteurs sur sa piste.
Notes : le film est l’adaptation d’un livre de Gerold Frank, lui-même inspiré d’un fait divers réel. Entre 1962 et 1964, une série de sordides meurtres de femmes agita Boston. Albert DeSalvo a été considéré comme irresponsable de ses actes, et n’a pas été jugé faute de preuves.
