Le célèbre peintre Jean-Baptiste Emmerich vient de mourir à Paris. Sa dernière volonté : être enterré à Limoges, sa ville de naissance, obligeant ainsi ses proches à prendre le train pour se rendre aux obsèques. Famille, héritiers, vrais et faux amis, tous se confrontent lors du voyage.
Note : Le scénario est inspiré de la mort du cinéaste François Reichenbach qui, sur son lit de mort, confia à Danièle Thompson sa volonté d'être inhumé à Limoges, lui déclarant “Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train”. Le film remporta trois César dont celui du meilleur réalisateur pour Patrice Chéreau.
