La jeune et timide Carrie est sans cesse malmenée. Au collège, elle est le souffre-douleur de ses camarades de classe qui ne cessent de se moquer d'elle. Chez elle, Carrie est tourmentée par une mère tyrannique et bigote. Lors d'un cours de sport, sous la douche, Carrie découvre du sang sur ses cuisses. Ignorant tout de son corps et de ses changements, elle panique et provoque l'hilarité de ses camarades. Invitée au bal de l'école par le séduisant Tommy, elle ignore qu'une farce de très mauvais goût se prépare. Lorsque Carrie se découvre des pouvoirs surnaturels, c'est l'heure de la vengeance...
