Jock, a well-to-do fishmonger, brings a woman called Odette from Saint-Brieuc to the small port in Brittany where he lives. K&eacute;riadec, a ruined squire, and Maurice, his bastard brother, are fascinated by the new arrival. Although Odette becomes the squire&#x27;s mistress, she is madly in love with Maurice and agrees to become his instrument of retaliation against K&eacute;riadec.
