Première femme cinéaste au monde, Alice Guy a marqué l’histoire du Cinéma. Véritable pionnière, elle débute avec La fée aux choux, dont la première version date de 1896, premier film fantastique de l'histoire du 7e art et première fiction Gaumont. Quelques années plus tard, elle réalise une série de films autour de la vie du Christ et donne naissance au péplum (elle en offrira un remake quelques années après avec La Naissance, la vie et la mort du Christ – 1906, son chef-d’œuvre). C’est elle qui fait rentrer Louis Feuillade chez Gaumont, qui deviendra l’un de ses plus grands auteurs (Fantômas, Les Vampires, Judex). En ayant l’idée de filmer un tournage, elle invente le concept de making of et nous laisse une trace inestimable de l’ambiance des tournages du début du siècle. Ses œuvres abordent aussi plus ou moins en filigrane la question de la place de la femme dans la société du début du XXème siècle, comme Les Résultats du féminisme, Une femme collante et Madame a des envies. Ce ne sont que quelques-uns des nombreux aspects de la très riche carrière de la légendaire Alice Guy, que nous vous proposons dans cette anthologie

« J’entendais, du matin au soir, parler de cinéma. Cependant, les films que l’on projetait n’étaient que des expériences de laboratoire : sorties d’usines, trains en marche, défilés de troupe. Il me semblait qu’on pouvait faire autre chose. M’armant un jour de courage, je demandai à monsieur Gaumont de m’autoriser à écrire et à faire jouer par mes camarades une ou deux saynètes. (…) La permission me fut accordée à condition que cela n’empiète pas sur mon travail de secrétaire. J’eus tôt fait de réunir quelques amis, de choisir mes costumes et d’écrire un semblant de scénario. A côté des ateliers de travaux photographiques, à Belleville, se trouvait un petit jardin, clos par un grand mur. C’est là que je mis en scène mon premier film, La fée aux choux. Je ne vous dirais pas que c’était une merveille ! cependant, si extraordinaire que cela puisse paraître aujourd’hui, ce fut un succès ; si bien que je fus autorisée à renouveler ma tentative. »

La Tare - 1911 (41 minutes) 
La Tare is exemplary of Louis Feuillade&#x27;s intentions towards the line, both aesthetic and moral, of his collection of films classified under the banner of &quot;Life as it is&quot;, the cinematic equivalent of the novels of Zola and Goncourt.

Le Nain - 1912 (17 minutes) 
Without doubt the most audacious of the series, this film seems, a rare occurrence, to have escaped L&eacute;on Gaumont&#x27;s inflexible censorship on subjects deemed &quot;delicate&quot; and likely to shock the public.

La Hantise - 1912 (24 minutes) 
The film of the series that &quot;sticks&quot; the most to the immediate current events of the time. With an astonishing modernity, Feuillade makes one of his best films, often described as an unknown masterpiece.

The scenes "of Life as it is" are unlike anything that has been done so far by the various publishers of the world. They are an attempt at realism that is being brought to the screen for the first time, just as it was years ago in literature, theatre and the arts. It was up to the Société des établissements Gaumont to attempt this essay first; the public will tell us if it succeeded.

Restauré par Lobster Films en collaboration avec The Blackhawk Film Collection et l’Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, ce numéro de vaudeville tourné entre deux représentations est longtemps resté une énigme. Que cherche à nous dire cette étrange et désopilante séquence ? Le mystère vient de s’éclaircir, puisqu’un historien du spectacle vivant au début du siècle a découvert le nom de l’auteur de cette routine : Alfred Latell (né Alfred Lee, ca. 1880s-1951), un imitateur animalier aux costumes et mécanismes spectaculaires. Sa carrière dura de 1902 à 1948, où il continuait à faire ses numéros à près de 70 ans. Un voyage dans le temps…

Restauré par Lobster Films en 2000 avec le concours de la Cinémathèque Française, ce film unique était distribué à l’origine en couleurs, grace au système de coloriage au pochoir. Malheureusement, aucune copie coloriée n’a survécu, à part un très court fragment (quelques images) dans les collections du département de la Charente (à l’époque Collection René Charles). A partir des éléments nitrates originaux noir et blanc, une copie a été tirée et coloriée au pinceau, image par image, par Hélène Bromberg. Trois mois de travail, et un résultat époustouflant.
