Après ses voyages mouvementés dans le temps, Marty McFly se retrouve seul, coincé en 1955, quand Doc disparaît à travers un éclair désintégrant la précieuse DeLorean qui devait les ramener vers le présent. Il apprend par une mystérieuse lettre venue du passé que Doc est prisonnier du Far West depuis un malencontreux accident de voiture en 1880 et menacé par un certain Buford "Molosse" Tannen qui s'est juré de le tuer.
