Ayant le projet de rouvrir sa blanchisserie au sortir de la guerre, Ryösuke et sa femme Masako, sont confrontés à la mort de leur fils aîné, Susumo, des suites d’une maladie. Quelque temps plus tard, Ryösuke se découvre lui aussi malade. Face à tout ça, Masako se plonge dans le travail et se rapproche de son ami Kimura.
