Tullio Hermil est un mondain oisif qui évolue dans la grande bourgeoisie italienne de la fin du 19ème siècle. Il entretient son narcissisme et affirme sa virilité au bras de Teresa, sa sublime maîtresse qu’il exhibe dans les salons auprès de ses amis et rivaux. Son épouse, Giuliana, dont il a fait sa confidente, lassée du manque d’amour auquel Tullio l’a condamnée, se laisse séduire par un jeune écrivain dont elle attend un enfant. Profondément meurtri dans son orgueil masculin, Tullio décide de faire à nouveau valoir ses droits maritaux.
Notes : L’Innocent est l’adaptation du roman homonyme de l’écrivain italien Gabriele D’Annunzio publié en 1892. Luchino Visconti, mort peu après la fin des prises de vues, n’eut jamais le temps de voir le film achevé. Il fut présenté à titre posthume à Cannes en mai 1976.
