Hinweis: Das Drehbuch von Gilbert Adair basiert auf seiner eigenen Kurzgeschichte (The Holy Innocents; 1988), die wiederum auf dem Roman von Jean Cocteau (Les Enfants terribles; 1929) basiert, der 1950 von Jean-Pierre Melville verfilmt wurde. Bertoluccis Werk enthält zahlreiche Filmreferenzen als Hommage an das amerikanische Kino und die französische Nouvelle Vague-Stilrichtung (unter anderem Scarface von Howard Hawks und Außer Atem von Jean-Luc Godard...).
