Kyoto, au 17ème siècle. Ishun est un grand parcheminier qui vit avec sa seconde épouse, Osan, plus jeune. Cette dernière ne l'a épousé que pour sauver sa famille du déshonneur. Amoureuse du secrétaire de son mari, qui doit fuir après avoir commis une escroquerie, elle le rejoint. Tous deux s'unissent pour tenter d'échapper à leur destin tragique : la crucifixion qui châtie l'adultère.
