A beetle is fleeing from a bird. No hiding place is safe from its pursuer. So it crawls into a dark crevice that the bird&#x27;s beak can&#x27;t reach. The beetle laughs at the bird. It hasn&#x27;t yet realized that it&#x27;s sitting in the space between the earth and the sole of a man&#x27;s shoe.

A Peaceful Day

A cage is searching for a bird, but all its efforts fail. Without its help, a bird finds a way in. The cage closes its door and stands proudly on a pedestal, for it is now worthy of admiration.

A small man sits on a train station bench. A bulky, initially polite man joins him, reads his newspaper, eats his travel provisions on the train, follows him, harasses him on the bus, in the taxi, and in his house, making himself at home. When the harassed man calls the police, the patrol arrests him, and the ruffian triumphs. The little man is released. Now helplessly exposed to the intruder&#x27;s harassment, he is thrown out.

In a raindrop that falls from a leaf and seeps into the earth, beautiful and cruel, happy and sad things happen and interpenetrate.

Kontraste

Kafka sees a waitress nibbling from a pot, which she is about to serve. In violent indignation, he complains. His complaint is upheld, and the girl is sentenced to be stoned. Kafka protests, saying he hadn&#x27;t meant to trigger this, but stones are thrown at the waitress all the more vigorously. Kafka, powerless against the machinery that has been set in motion, takes his own life. Meanwhile, the girl is restored to health and sent back to serve with the pot.

Afghanistan, 1981, and the Soviet Union is locked in a futile and bloody battle with the Mujahedeen guerrillas. Separated from their patrol, the crew of a Russian T-62 tank engages in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the local insurgents led by Taj (Steven Bauer). The tyrannical tank commander Daskal (George Dzundza) wreaks havoc on a peaceful Afghani village, pushing the moral boundaries of the tank driver, Koverchenko, (Jason Patric) to the limits. Sensing mutiny, the psychotic Daskal abandons the disenchanted tanker to die in the desert at the hand of rebels, only to find he&#x27;s sealed his own fate.
