Plácido est un conducteur de triporteur qui doit absolument payer son véhicule, acheté à crédit. A la veille de Noël, il est sollicité par un riche industriel de la ville pour organiser un dîner de charité lors duquel les bourgeois accueilleraient un pauvre à leur table. Motivé par la somme d’argent à la clé, Plácido se lance alors dans la préparation de l’événement.
