Fraîchement arrivé à Brooklyn, Stingo aspire à devenir écrivain. Il fait la rencontre de ses voisins, un jeune couple d’immigrés : Sophie, rescapée d’Auschwitz et Nathan, un intellectuel juif au comportement imprévisible. Tous deux traumatisés par la Seconde Guerre mondiale, ils trouvent en Stingo une forme de réconfort.
