Au printemps 1936, David, au chômage et dégoûté de l’Angleterre, décide de quitter Liverpool pour s’engager en Espagne combattre les troupes franquistes. Il tombe amoureux de Blanca, qui n’a d’yeux que pour Coogan. 

Note : Le titre vient du nom d’un périodique anarchiste espagnol : Tierra y Libertad. Le film est aussi partiellement inspiré du livre de George Orwell : Hommage à la Catalogne.
