Dans le Japon féodal du XVIIeme siècle, la vieille courtisane O’Haru erre dans un temple et se remémore sa vie. Issue de l’aristocratie, elle était promise à un riche seigneur lorsqu’elle a cédé aux avances d’un homme inférieur à son rang. Déshonorée et forcée à l’exil, elle a alors été la concubine d’un prince avant d’être chassée, puis vendue par son père comme courtisane.
