Tout juste divorcée, Jo retourne à Rhode Island, sur les lieux de son enfance malheureuse, dans l’espoir de panser ses blessures. Elle y retrouve sa mère adoptive, avec qui elle n’a jamais réussi à s’entendre, et se rapproche peu à peu de la famille voisine. Troublée par leur fille, qui lui rappelle étrangement l’enfant qu’elle était, elle se lie avec Donna, la mère, une artiste instable en pleine tourmente. Une amitié profonde naît entre les deux femmes.
