Gérard est un ingénieur au chômage. Sa femme, Gabrielle, féministe ultra engagée, l’a quitté et il se retrouve seul pour élever son fils Pierrot. Gérard fait la connaissance de Valérie, puéricultrice, qui vient s’installer chez lui. Le couple se construit peu à peu et Valérie éprouve de l’attachement maternel pour Pierrot. Mais Gérard devient excessivement jaloux et sa compagne souffre de sa sexualité agressive et de son comportement violent.
