Brandon et Philip, deux étudiants new-yorkais voulant mettre à exécution une théorie qui veut que les êtres plus intelligents aient le droit de vie sur les autres, assassinent un camarade de classe. Assurés d’avoir commis le crime parfait, les deux meurtriers invitent la famille du défunt à dîner alors que le cadavre de ce dernier est caché dans une malle, sous leurs yeux…
Note : Hitchcock a voulu que les raccords entre les plans soient discrets pour donner aux spectateurs l'illusion que le film a été tourné en un unique plan-séquence.
