Condamnée à vivre avec sa maladie, Flora Goforth migre sur une île. D’un caractère tyrannique, Flora s’en prend facilement à ses serviteurs et à l’ensemble des habitants. C’est alors que Chris Flanders, poète et gigolo, s’installe à son tour sur l’île. Il devient vite sa nouvelle.
