Kelly Reichardt

Kelly Reichardt

  • American director, born in 1964 in Miami (Florida).

Practising photography since childhood, Kelly Reichardt studied at Boston Fine Arts. She made her début in film by collaborating on films by Hal Hartley or Todd Haynes. Her first feature, River of Grass (1995), was hailed by the critics. After several medium-length films of great freedom, she found the path towards features with Old Joy (2006) which marked the start of her international recognition. In a minimalist and often contemplative style, Kelly Reichardt’s cinema explores rural America, both its land and history, revisiting the genres of the Western (Meek's Cutoff, First Cow) or thriller (Night Moves), presenting people or activities seldom represented onscreen. Since Old Joy, she has regularly collaborated with writer Jon Raymond and edits most of her films herself. Commencing with Certain Women (2016), which gently captures the movements of solitude, she has been considered one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers. In 2022, when Showing Up was in competition at Cannes, Reichardt received the Golden Coach at the Directors’ Fortnight. Three years later, she returned to Cannes with The Mastermind, a panorama of the seventies, between the Vietnam War and feminist struggles.
