Amat Escalante

  • Mexican director born in Barcelona in 1979.

    After studying film in Catalonia and Cuba, Amat Escalante returned to Mexico in 2002 where he directed his first short film, Amarrados. Three years later, his first feature, Sangre, a radical film about the life of an ordinary couple in Mexico, won the International Critics’ Prize after its presentation at Cannes in Un Certain Regard. In 2008, Los Bastardos presented two clandestine Mexican workers, but it was Heli, describing the violence of a Mexican society corrupted by drugs, which was to earn him international fame, winning the Best Director Award at Cannes in 2013. He went on to broach the fantasy genre with The Untamed, which won the Silver Lion for Best Director in Venice in 2016. Recently, he has directed several episodes of season 4 of Narcos: Mexico.
