In den 1920er Jahren wird Hauptmann Dumitriu in Rumänien in ein isoliertes Gebiet versetzt, nachdem seine Frau die Vorstöße eines Generals abgelehnt hatte. Der Kapitän wird gezwungen, mit seiner Familie umzuziehen, und erhält bald den Befehl, bulgarische Dorfbewohner hinzurichten. Seine Frau versucht, ihn davon abzubringen.
