Geneviève, 17 Jahre alt und Guy, zwanzig, leben die Große Liebe. Aber wie der graue Himmel über Cherbourg ahnen lässt, sind die Zeiten nicht glücklich. Tatsächlich ist Guy bald gezwungen, die Garage zu verlassen in der er arbeitet und seine Geliebte, um in die französische Armee einzutreten, immer noch in Algerien mobilisiert. Am Vorabend seiner Abreise entscheidet sich Geneviève dazu, ihre Liebe zu besiegeln, und schwört ihm Treue. Aber die Zeit vergeht und die von Guy schwangere Geneviève bemerkt, dass die Briefe aus Algerien immer seltener werden…
