Ben Brigade, un chasseur de prime, a arrêté le criminel Billy John en pleine montagne, et le ramène à la ville. Les deux hommes croisent sur la route une jeune femme dont le mari vient d’être tué par des Indiens, ainsi que deux hors-la-loi, intéressés eux aussi par l’amnistie promise à qui livrerait Billy à la justice. Le groupe est suivi par Frank, le frère de Billy, qui tente de le faire libérer. Et c’est Frank qui intéresse véritablement Ben, les deux hommes partageant un lourd secret.
