In Kalkutta ist Apu ein aufgeweckter junger Hochschulabsolvent, der keine Arbeit findet und seine Zeit mit dem Schreiben seiner Autobiografie verbringt. Als er an einer Hochzeit teilnimmt, wird diese abgesagt, weil der Bräutigam unter schweren psychischen Problemen leidet. Alle Dorfbewohner versuchen, die Braut um jeden Preis zu heiraten. Apu, der wohlwollend ist, willigt ein, sich an sie zu binden.
