Alors que l’Allemagne est plongée dans les méandres de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Maria épouse le soldat Hermann Braun la veille de son départ pour le front russe. Disparu sur le champ de bataille, Hermann est présumé mort. Maria, de son côté, travaille dans un bar à soldats et se console dans les bras de Bill, un soldat afro-américain...
Notes : suivi par Lola, une Femme allemande en 1981 et Le Secret de Veronika Voss en 1982, Le Mariage de Maria Braun est le premier volet de la trilogie Allemande de Rainer Werner Fassbinder. A travers les destinés tourmentées de ses trois personnages féminins, le réalisateur y livre sa vision pessimiste d’une Allemagne reconstruite sur les ruines de la guerre et toujours hantée par les spectres du nazisme.
