A proposition by Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute

A representative work of the Taiwanese family melodrama genre, this film is adapted from the literary romance novel A World of Human Warmth and Coldness. Director HSIN Chi masterfully focuses on a tragic love triangle shaped by class disparities, vividly portraying the violence women endure in a patriarchal society. It is a classic example of the sadness-laden Taiyupian.

Tshui-giok's step-father sells her to a club to pay off his debt. Her boyfriend, Kok-liong, attempts to release her and plans to marry her but his mother disapproves and arranges for him to marry a wealthy girl, Hun-kiau. Years later, Tshui-giok and Kok-liong meet again; their feelings rekindled. However, Tshui-giok rejects Kok-liong for the sake of Hun-kuai. The decision drives him mad and eventually Hun-kuai sets Kok-liong free to be with Tshui-giok. A key film, at the pinnacle of Taiwanese-language family melodrama.
