Toni est un ouvrier italien qui s’est installé en Provence pour travailler dans les carrières de pierre. Il devient l’amant de Marie, sa logeuse, et l’épouse alors même qu’il se consume d’amour pour la belle espagnole Josépha. Celle-ci trompe son mari avec Gabi, qui la persuade de voler tout l’argent du foyer.
Notes : Pour Toni, Jean Renoir s’est inspiré d’un fait réel et a tourné en décors naturels, engageant des gens du pays comme acteurs. Luchino Visconti, alors premier assistant sur le tournage, fût sans doute influencé par le film lorsqu’il réalisa Les Amants diaboliques, œuvre fondamentale du néo-réalisme italien.
