En 1968 dans le Nebraska, Joe, un fermier reconverti en policier, assassine un délinquant en légitime défense, le jour même où son frère Frank rentre du Vietnam. Si dans leur enfance les deux frères partageaient la même vision de la vie, ce n’est plus le cas une fois adultes : Joe, bon avec les autres, prône les valeurs traditionnelles de son pays tandis que Frank, violent, tente de vivre sans contraintes.
Note : Le scénario d’Indian Runner s’inspire de la chanson "Highway Patrolman" de Bruce Springsteen, ainsi que d'une vieille légende indienne sur l'épreuve que doivent passer les jeunes gens pour entrer dans l'âge adulte.
