À Lisbonne, Aurora, une vieille femme sur le point de mourir, appelle à son chevet un ancien amant, Ventura. Il arrive trop tard, mais à la voisine et à la femme de ménage de la défunte, il se confie sur leur histoire d’amour romanesque, alors qu’Aurora était enceinte et mariée, dans l’Afrique coloniale des années 1960.
