Bill Schmidt, sa femme Martha et leur fils vivent paisiblement dans une propriété isolée du Connecticut. Alors que le paysage est enseveli sous une épaisse couche de neige, Bill reçoit la visite inattendue de deux anciens soldats avec qui il a combattu au Vietnam. La surprise des retrouvailles cède peu à peu la place à l’inquiétude devant l’attitude trouble des deux hommes.
