Kári et Halla sont éperdument amoureux, mais le jeune homme est rattrapé par son passé de voleur. Il s’enfuit dans les montagnes islandaises, rapidement rejoint par sa fiancée. Ensemble, ils reconstruisent tranquillement leur vie lorsqu’un vieil ami de Kári fait son apparition.
Note : Louis Delluc dira du film : « Voilà, sans aucun doute, le plus beau film du monde. [...] Sjöström l'a réalisé avec une dignité qui dépasse tout commentaire ».
