Bill Denny, journaliste malchanceux au jeu, fait la rencontre de Charlie Waters, un autre joueur compulsif et tisse avec lui une solide amitié basée sur leur mutuelle addiction. Charlie, joueur expérimenté et insatiable, entraîne bientôt son nouveau compère dans la vie décousue qu’il partage occasionnellement avec deux prostituées nommées Susan et Barbara. Entre coups de chance et grosses déveines, les deux hommes doivent redoubler d’ingéniosité pour trouver l’argent nécessaire à leur passion.
