En 1935, après la mort brutale de leur fille à l'âge de sept semaines, la famille McCourt décide de retrouver l'Irlande afin de fuir ses conditions de vie misérables. Angela, son mari alcoolique et leurs quatre fils quittent alors le port de New York pour Limerick où ils reçoivent un accueil glacial dans une Irlande marquée par la Grande Dépression.

Note : Le film est l'adaptation des mémoires de Frank McCourt, lauréat du prix Pulitzer en 1997.
