Dans une petite ville d’Auvergne, Monique et Roger tiennent une mercerie. Monique apprend qu’elle est atteinte d’un cancer en phase terminale. Leur fils Philippe et sa femme Nathalie viennent alors s’installer chez eux pour l’accompagner dans ses derniers moments. Mais la mort imminente de Monique ne bouleverse pas leur quotidien. Roger continue à mener son existence égoïste d’alcoolique et de coureur de jupons. Quand à Philippe, il voit des prostituées et malmène sa femme. La vie continue, triviale, cruelle.
