Férus adversaires de la peine de mort, Austin Spencer et Tom Garrett, tous deux journalistes, décident de monter une fausse affaire afin de provoquer une erreur judiciaire qui démontrerait que des innocents sont condamnés à mort. Ils fabriquent de fausses preuves et l’affaire défraie rapidement la chronique. Le jour du jugement, Austin, chargé d'apporter les preuves de falsification, meurt accidentellement.
