Le récit de la conquête spatiale américaine. En 1947, le pilote américain Chuck Yeager réussit à franchir le mur du son ; dix ans après, les Russes lancent le programme Spoutnik, le premier engin placé en orbite autour de la Terre. Très vite, les Etats-Unis répliquent, dans le contexte de la Guerre froide et de la course à l’espace : après une sélection éprouvante, sept astronautes sont choisis pour faire partie du programme Mercury, destiné à envoyer le premier Américain dans l’espace…
