Sal, un italo américain, tient en compagnie de ses deux fils une pizzeria à Bedford Stuyvesant, le quartier noir de Brooklyn. Pourtant, il n’apprécie guère ni la couleur de peau de ses clients, ni leur musique de sauvages. Un jour, las des provocations, Sal détruit le radio-cassette de Radio Raheem, le caïd du quartier. Sous la chaleur de la canicule, le fragile équilibre de la communauté va alors céder sous le poids d’une violence trop longtemps larvée…
