Agnieszka Holland
Born in 1948 in Warsaw (Poland).
A child of the post-war period, Agnieszka Holland comes from a family of Jewish Polish journalists and resistance fighters. This legacy founds her relationship to cinema, as a locus of twentieth-century collective memory. Her early days as a filmmaker coincide with the young cinema of Central Europe. During the Prague Spring, she trained at the reputable Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU). Then, in Poland in the 1970s, she worked with Wajda towards a “cinema of moral concern”, among auteurs like Kieślowski. In 1981, the state of siege forced her into exile. She then pursued a prolific career in the West, deploying her narrative obsessions in historical and political thrillers: from Europa Europa, a story from the Shoah that won awards at the 1992 Golden Globes, to Mr. Jones, an inquiry into the Ukrainian genocide presented at the Berlinale in 2019. In the United States, she turned her attention to auteur television, directing episodes of The Wire, Treme, or House of Cards.
