Keiko, mère célibataire plutôt volage, vit avec ses quatre enfants dans un petit appartement de Tokyo. Tous nés de pères différents, les enfants ne sont jamais allés à l’école et assument toutes les tâches ménagères tandis que leur mère travaille. Un jour, celle-ci disparaît, laissant ses enfants livrés à eux-mêmes.
