Joanna Hogg
British director, born in London in 1960.
Joanna Hogg began her career as a photographer, and later joined the National and Television School. There, she directed Caprice (1986), starring Tilda Swinton with whom she has worked regularly since then. Hogg worked several years for British television before she released her first feature film, Unrelated (2007), that received the FIPRESCI Prize at the London Film Festival. The film reveals actor Tom Hiddleston, who also stars in her successive movie Archipelago (2010). Hogg’s films are characterized by a peculiar attention to the frame that comes from her work as a photographer. The Souvenir inspired by her own experience, won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2019. She followed this up with The Souvenir Part II, which won the Best Editing and the Best Production Design award at the British Independent Film Awards in 2021. In-between situations, intimacy and duality are recurring themes in her work, as in Eternal Daughter (2023), which explores the mother-daughter relationship.
