Dans les faubourgs du Japon industriel, Rokuchan conduit chaque jour un tramway imaginaire. Le jeune garçon déambule ainsi dans son quartier et croise le chemin de divers habitants plongés dans la misère : un ouvrier persécuté par sa femme, une jeune fille subissant les attouchements de son oncle, mais aussi un père et son fils qui rêvent d’une autre vie.
Note : Dodes'kaden est le premier film en couleurs réalisé par Akira Kurosawa.
