1528. Als einer der wenigen Überlebenden eines Schiffswracks vor der Küste Floridas wird der spanische Entdecker Cabeza de Vaca von einem indischen Schamanen, dessen Schüler er wurde, in die Sklaverei verkauft. Einige Jahre später freigelassen, unternimmt der Entdecker eine lange Wanderung von Louisiana nach Mexiko, bei der er seine Lehre auf die Probe stellt und sich mit Heilungen und Wundern bekannt macht...
