In Hungary, the national movement led by Kossuth has been crushed and the Austrian hegemony re-established, but partisans carry on with violent actions. In order to root out the guerilla, the army rounds up suspects and jails them in an isolated fort. The authorities do not have the identity of the guerilla leaders, who are supposed to be present among the prisoners. However, they know enough about some of the suspects to apply perfidious forms of coercion effectively.

Seventeen-year-old J&oacute;ska is captured by the Soviet in the last days of World War II. He is posted to a soldier lad to help him guard the cowherd. J&oacute;ska tries to escape, Kolja keeps him from entering the mined area using his gun. Despite their opposed position and language barrier a friendly relationship is formed between them. They feast on the meat of the exploded cow together and chase girls when Kolja suddenly dies of a former injury. J&oacute;ska tries to get to the station dressed in his uniform. Some of the former POWs recognize him and thinking that he was a collaborate they beat him up thoroughly.

This is the first film of the &quot;Hungarian new wave&quot;. A company of young people spend their summer holidays by the Tisza. They are absorbed in sun-bathing and swimming, and more and more of them dive into the depth of the river to collect some mud. None of the young people notices that one of them is no longer with them, that Gabi drowned in the river. The tragedy which happened to their friend forces them to examine their own conscious asking themselves who is responsible, how they relate to the world and each other. They grow into adulthood burdened by the tragedy, their relationships are transformed. Luja and Zoli are willing to face their conscience. Laci finds consolation in abstract principles, while others try to idealise their role.

The documentarist film depicts how a young weaver girl is trying to find herself and what identity-problems she has. Szőnyi Erzsi, textile-worker, grew up in F&oacute;t, the town for neglected children. She puts an advertisement in the papers, trying to find her parents and unexpectedly gets a reply. She visits her mother in V&aacute;rk&uacute;t, who is scared of her beautiful and too natural daughter and continues to hide their relationship from her husband. Erzsi, lonesome and depressed by her failure lets things happen to her. She starts a passing affair with the boy she met on the train. She listens to a depraved man who tells her about his dead parents and comforts him. Then, in a club, where the Ill&eacute;s Band is playing she does not resist G&aacute;bor&#x27;s defiant glances, either.

The film is about the possible attitudes one can assume towards tyranny and dictatorship in the modern man&#x27;s perspective. Oreste and Elektreia stand up against oppression of freedom in the name of justice, law, and revolution. On the day of Aegistos&#x27; accession to the throne - and which is supposed to be the day of telling the truth - people remain silent. The &quot;cracked-brained&quot; is the only one who instigates, waiting desperately for Oreste. Her brother arrives to take vengeance for his father, and they kill each other to rise later as phoenix birds again and again wherever freedom is wanted. A red colour helicopter takes them there.

Fran&ccedil;ois, a ten-year-old, abandoned child, was entrusted to the foster-care system. He lives with a host family in Lens in northern France: the Joignys who have a daughter, Josette. Fran&ccedil;ois usually gets into trouble and is even cruel to the family cat. Tired of his incontrollable behavior, the Joignys call the special educator and ask him to find a new home for Fran&ccedil;ois. Fran&ccedil;ois is then sent to live with an elderly couple, the Thierrys, the husband of which is a former resistance fighter and a retired miner. At &quot;Gram and Pap&#x27;s,&quot; Fran&ccedil;ois discovers a whole new family with a fifteen-year-old boy, Raoul, who is also a child of the French foster-car system. Fran&ccedil;ois seems to fit into this warm family. Yet once again, he commits new offenses, so he is sent to a rehabilitation center. The Thierrys receive a letter from him, in which he promises to do his best to return home for Christmas.
