In 1961, Rita returns to her home village after suffering a breakdown. As she recovers, she recalls the last two years: her love for Manfred, a chemist ten years her senior; his enthusiasm for his new chemical process, which turned to bitter disappointment when it was rejected; his escape to West Berlin a few weeks before the Berlin Wall was built; and his hope that she would follow him.
