Jean, déserteur de l’infanterie coloniale, débarque dans un faubourg du Havre. Il y fait la connaissance de Nelly, une belle orpheline. Jean souhaiterait s’expatrier vers le Venezuela. Mais retenu par les beaux yeux de Nelly, le jeune homme espère tirer sa dulcinée des griffes de son tuteur, le vil Zabel, un scélérat qui nourrit d’ailleurs des désirs incestueux pour sa pupille.
