Jean Viard est un routier vieillissant méprisé par sa femme et ses enfants. Avec son ami et coéquipier Berty, ils font escale le soir de Noël dans leur relai préféré « Le Quotidien ». Ils y font la connaissance de Clotilde, une toute jeune serveuse fraîchement embauchée. Peu à peu, Jean et Clotilde tombent amoureux. Mais la relation de ces deux êtres esseulés et abîmés par la vie sera bien vite tourmentée.
